Peat mixture. Master blender choise
Like whiskey makers, blending good peat substrates is a real art that requires experience and knowledge. There are no two identical bogs, each peat has its own characteristics (spirit). Only a good craftsman knows how to make the right choice and the proportions to match the result. (A master blender is an individual who develops specific blended spirits using a combination of spirits with different characteristics). We would like to say that each peat also has its own spirit (word game – spirits and spirit). There is another similarity between these industries. In the production of whiskey, the distinct flavour is found in its peaty taste which is produced in the early malting process by adding peat smoke.
Main characteristics of peat types. What master blender have?
The main limiting factors for better blend selection.
- Peat mixture is chosen by the customer. Here, the economic factor often plays a decisive role. Peat types cost a variety of money.
- Equipment the grower works with. Trays/pots filling machines have their own requirements. In order to make the process as fast as possible, the peat mixture used must be very homogeneous, free-flowing. Not everything better for the plant is good for filling machines.
- Not all peat substrate manufacturers have sufficient peat resources available to provide their factories with all the types of peat they need. For example, if there is white peat, not black, and vice versa.
- The manufacturer does not have the necessary equipment to properly handle the required peat types
How to combine the best features of different types of peat?
Substrates based on best selected peat moss – the base for success
If the producer has all the necessary peat types, they are of good quality, properly obtained from the bog, well sifted, have suitable production equipment, then the possibilities are quite wide.
